Today, I’m writing about an event that I find rather interesting and quite inspirational. It makes me want to think up cool events to hold for children to help them learn while having fun. The event is called “Touch-a-Truck” and is held annually in the City of Galesburg in Illinois. This is the 12th year this event has taken place. The main point of the event is to allow youth to explore different types of large equipment, up close and hands-on. Different from an average museum, the children can climb on, get in and touch all the equipment that is on exhibit. This year, they will be featuring a Boeing CH-47D Aircraft form the Illinois National Guard.

There will also be tractors, police cars, delivery trucks, ambulances, bucket trucks and many other varieties of large trucks. What a great idea. Local schools take fieldtrips to this event and basically the kids are allowed to check out anything they want. This is a great way to help kids, from an early point in life, realize and get a hands-on awareness that there are so many different vehicles that help the world go-round. It sounds like a great, and fun, learning experience.

There are surrounding nature trails at the event location as well as shelters and picnic tables. For more information about this event in Illinois, you can visit the Galesburg Planet website.

Picture From Wikipedia of an Emerald Ash Borer

A plague of Emerald Ash Borers is sweeping through North America and Canada and is threatening to kill off our entire population of Ash Trees. Wikipedia states they were accidentally introduced here back in the 90′s but were discovered in 2002. Indiana is being hit pretty hard with over 200 communities affected, and several states have implemented quarantines including Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, New York and Ohio. Ontario, a province of Canada, has also enforced a quarantine. There have been tens of millions of trees to die so far and has cost property owners and cities millions and millions of dollars.

Tree trimming work will be very high in the short few years to come. The Daily Herald in Indiana reported that David Brown, public works director, said this:

“It’s hard to predict these things but based on our research and getting into the crowns of trees with our bucket trucks, we’re seeing more and more damage than last fall,”

Cities are working to remove these trees completely and replace. Dead trees will need to be cut down and moved also. In the northeast of the country, it’s a great time to be a tree trimmer. It’s a sad time to be a tree.

There is tons of info at www.emeraldashborer.info on how to identify these devastating beetles, studies dating back to were first discovered in North America, etc.

If your community has been hit with these beetles, tell us the details below and how they have affected you.

It is that time of the year again. A time dreaded by anyone across tornado alley and the south. Tornado season is here and this year, it started off with a bang. Last week, at least 45 tornadoes ripped through the heartland of our country and left total chaos and destruction behind them. At least 41 people are dead from Indiana to Georgia. There was an EF-3 tornado that touched down in Kentucky and didn’t let up until 95 miles later in West Virginia. Indiana had the strongest tornado registering at EF-4 with winds as fast as 175mph which spanned 45 miles or so in Indiana and Kentucky.

It seems to be getting worse year by year, and reports say that climate change is the cause.

This year in Texas, we barely even had a winter.

The destruction caused be these violent acts of mother nature is detrimental to millions across the country. It’s particularly bad for small towns that can be completely wiped out within a matter of seconds. It’s worse when these towns aren’t ready with proper equipment to handle the aftermath and support the cleanup efforts. The worst situation is when you’re town is too small to afford the equipment to have on hand in the first place. We’ve heard several awesome stories in which case larger surrounding cities and counties lend their hands or equipment to the smaller ones who don’t have the funds to take care of themselves. We encourage you to be a part of that by lending your city bucket trucks to those in need. Typically, if you provide the equipment, they’ll have enough for the electricity or gas to run it. The problem with this, though, is that, maybe your town got hit too and your equipment is currently being utilized for your city. To that, we say consider paying to rent a bucket truck or other heavy equipment to help your neighboring town’s cleanup effort.

If you aren’t able to help with respect to the cleanup equipment, there are several other ways to help tornado victims. Recovering from these storms doesn’t happen over night. It is a long and lengthy process. Anything you can do to help is better than doing nothing at all.

Well, our paint shop is anyway..

Occasionally, we have requests for a paint job on a bucket truck or digger that is out of the normal realm for us. We will accommodate any of our clients with a custom paint job for the color of their choice, if they’d like. Recently, one of our clients decided they wanted to have their truck painted the same color as their business logo, which is green, silver and black. It’s been so fun watching this truck transform. Around the shop, we’ve been calling it “The Hulk”. We have been excited about this project around the office, because, as you can see, the green is certainly bright! It is definitely the first time we’ve used green in our paint shop! Check out these pictures… (apologies for the poor image quality)

It sure is bright, but it’s always exciting to change things up a bit. What do you think? Let us know by dropping us a comment below!

We’re almost finished with this awesome paint job and then it will be back to the regular white, black and yellow paint. Which brings me to my next thought:

Did you know that Southwest Equipment has a full service shop that includes a garage where we provide maintenance and repair of bucket trucks and additionally where we do all our refurbishing? We don’t stop our refurbishing process at the parts! Our shop is also equipped with our very own paint shop. We completely redo the body and paint work too! Because of our extensive knowledge about bucket trucks and our full service shop, we can offer you the lowest prices around!

If you own a bucket truck, you should definitely stop by one of our locations to check out the awesome work areas we have. Our mechanics are top notch and our painters won’t be outdone! If your truck is getting old and worn out, maybe it’s time for a refurbish. When you decide that is what you need, give us a call; we’ll be waiting.

Picture of a Frestry Bucket Truck
Bucket Trucks are what you use to safely reach heights that you can’t get to with a ladder. That means all kinds of industries utilize bucket trucks in their everyday work. The most common industries you see using “cherry pickers” are electric co-ops, cable companies, sign repair, window washers, and forestry businesses.
Bucket trucks have different types of action for lifting. Some utilize a type of scissor lift where the bucket raises and lowers on a hinge. Other types of lifting action include a telescoping and articulating boom. The boom moves out and up from a single mount, sort of how the name implies.

Surely you’ve seen bucket trucks on the side of the road, working on telephone poles. They are much more common than you would think. These trucks allow much of the modern amenities we have to be installed and expanded at a fast rate. Services like telephones, electricity, cable, and internet are all widespread and available thanks to the use of bucket trucks.
Although they make higher jobs safer, bucket trucks actually are quite dangerous. Most accidents involve human error and can be avoided with the correct amount of caution. When operating a cherry picker, be sure you have the knowledge and training that is necessary. Being unprepared to operate an aerial lift can be extremely dangerous.
The next time you see a guy in a bucket working on a telephone pole, you will have a greater appreciation and understanding of what it is he is doing. People that work in bucket trucks are often called to restore power or cable during a storm or natural disaster. Keep that in mind during the next storm. Give linemen and bucket truck workers a big thanks for keeping life the way it is today… safer and more convenient.
