Seeing as how we’re located in the awesome town of Lewisville, TX, I thought I should post about Old Town Lewisville. Old Town is a really unique look into Lewisville’s past. Lewisville was settled in the 1840′s as an outpost for those heading to the Southwest and primarily from a land grant from the State of Texas in an effort to populate Denton county. Today, Lewisville is a bustling bedroom community in the Dallas – Ft. Worth Metro area that provides just as much charm as it did 170 years ago.

At the beginning, the area of Lewisville was known as the Holford Prarie Settlement, named after it’s founding families. The Wichita Railroad was eventually what brought the settlement to the place known today as Old Town. In 1855 Basdeal Lewis laid way to a plan for growing a city named after himself. Lewisville and Old Town were conceptualized and planned growth. Buildings eventually were constructed near the railroad and Lewisville grew steadily until 1950 with Old Town being the centerpiece of it’s social and cultural activities.

In the 1950′s, the construction of Lewisville Dam and the creation Lewisville Lake was the first step in a population explosion. The simultaneous construction of US 77 (I-35E) brought more interstate traffic and subsequently commerce. In  1970, the population of Lewisville reached 9,200. Job growth and significant residential building increased Lewisville’s population to 25,000 by 1980. Today, the city’s population is over 100,000 and Old Town is still the main attraction for tourists and residents alike. Cultural events like “Western Days” keeps locals attracted to the downtown area known as Old Town.

I first moved to Lewisville, TX last year. Personally, I found the community to be great. Everyone I’ve met has been friendly and helpful. My first real Old Town experience was during Western Days and I had a lot of fun watching the tamale eating competition. I want to say on behalf of Southwest Equipment and myself, thanks Lewisville.

Building up our communities doesn’t end with laying the bricks and mortar of our homes and businesses.  Though these buildings comprise the physical structure of our communities, the buildings themselves are not the heart and soul of our communities.

Businesses can help improve their local communities by making contributions of time, goods and monies to support organizations that provide youth with positive role models, advanced educational opportunities, and that promote team building.  The Bucket Truck Blogger is interested in hearing stories of how your business is contributing to the improvement of youth in your community.

Send your submissions of 300 to 500 words to Sam Page, along with a statement granting The Bucket Truck Blogger rights to publish your submission on our blog.  Authors are welcome to include a brief tag line with a link back to their business or blog.  Due to the demographic of our readership, The Bucket Truck Blogger gives strong preference to submissions from businesses with connections to the telecommunications, electric utility and forestry industries.

Through contributions from individuals and local businesses like Southwest Equipment, organizations like the HVABSA are helping to enrich the lives of children in the local community.  A few ways the children are experiencing benefits as a result of the efforts of the HVABSA include:

  • Positive Adult Role Models. Regardless of the family situation at home, the old adage “it takes a village to raise a child” holds true.  The adults contributing their time and energy into making the HVABSA possible are demonstrating to these children the virtues of good sportsmanship and team work, lessons these children will undoubtably benefit from for the rest of their lives.
  • Healthier Lifestyles. Between the bulk of their day being spent sitting in a classroom and the temptation to indulge in too much television and video gaming during their off hours, children today need a motivator to get outside with their friends and get some exercise.  Organizations like the HVABSA are encouraging kids to do just that by providing them with an athletic outlet that is engaging, competitive, and satisfies the child’s craving for social interaction with his peers.
  • Increased Self Esteem. Kids need to feel like they ‘fit in’ to a group of their peers.  Organizations like the HVABSA satisfy that need in a positive way.  Children who feel good about themselves are likely less vulnerable to peer pressure when faced with choices about gangs, drugs and alcohol.

Now, it’s your turn, readers.  Tell the Bucket Truck Blogger what your company is doing to make a positive difference in your local community.
